Books

I love painting books. I am drawn to their physical presence, the smell of the paper, the weight in my hands, their texture and the beautiful images on their covers. There is something wonderfully intimate about a book as an object, quite apart from the words and knowledge they contain. I have distinct memories of the physical nature of the books I’ve read, sometimes more so than the stories they hold. Books also carry a sense of anticipation. A closed book suggests the promise of something waiting to be discovered. Books have always held a particular kind of magic for me. I feel sentimental about them, not simply for what they contain, but for the sense of history they carry.
